Home Life: Truth in Clichés

There are some statements or phrases that no matter how frequently they’re used or how long they’ve been around, just continue to hold true. We call them clichés, but there’s a reason such sentiments are so common. As applied to home-life, it’s easy to see why these sayings continue to be used.

“A stitch, in time, saves nine”

Clearly, procrastination can and often does lead to more work in the long run. The above saying indicates that it may be up to nine times as much work later, if you wait rather than completing a task immediately. It doesn’t only apply to mending either. Can you think of any repairs that began as very small projects but grew into larger ones due to being put off?

“Home is where the Heart is”

It may be difficult to think of anywhere else as home, especially if you love the place where you currently live. However, anywhere that love, life, and warmth are shared, can be transformed into a home. While we enjoy discussing color, décor, treatments and techniques, projects, accessories, etc. home is about so much more. There’s another saying that talks about home being the place where your heart can rest. What a beautiful description.

“If Mama isn’t happy, nobody’s happy”

Okay, I don’t think this one should apply only to Mama. I’ve seen it apply to Daddy, teenagers, and two year olds as well. But, there is truth to the idea that when one family member is unhappy, in ill health, or struggling in some other way, it does affect the entire household. We absorb the pain of the people we love and this is especially true of people who share a home.

Again, clichés didn’t just happen. They came to be because they hold sentiments that large numbers of people can relate to, leading them to be used again and again…

Are there any special sayings that come to mind when you think of home?
