Sometimes I sit down. Now, it’s not often, not with a child and four cats around. They tend to take up all of the possible seating space anyway. And when I sit down, sometimes I look around and see all of the possible things that I can do in our house.
We all have these renovation fantasies, I think. In some ways I am lucky that we only live in a townhouse. In a stand-alone house, my fantasies would extend to the roof and beyond. Solar power? Heck, yes! Thick cob walls? Of course. Yes, for now it is better that we are in a townhouse.
What are my home renovation dreams? Well, we are going to have guests over tonight, and as always I am a little embarrassed by the fact that a number of our kitchen cupboards do not have doors on them. The doors fell off due to dry rot and general age in the last five years, leaving us with “open concept” cupboards, as my neighbor says. He had open concept cupboards too until he renovated the originals. So one of my renovation dreams is to change our kitchen, add recycled paper countertops made out of paper stone, and put in a tile floor, thereby replacing cracked floors and counters at the same time. New cupboards are also on the list, of course, preferably ones that go up to the ceiling so I don’t need to dust up there. A super energy efficient fridge is also on the list, both because it would save a ridiculous amount of energy and because our existing fridge is broken in any number of small, irritating ways.
The rest of the house? Well, we’ve been working on it gradually. My husband and I disagree about the wood paneling in the basement. He thinks it’s 1970s groovy, I think it’s a little bit like the den of a 1970s monster. We’re at a truce right now. Our windows need replacing on the top floor, since they were designed to leak air and water, apparently. Other than that? Well, as I look out onto the very wet and falling snow, I’m grateful to have a warm place to be. That’s the best place of my home renovation dream, and it’s already happened.
What are your plans for your home?
