Safety. It may not be the first thing we think about when entertaining holiday guests. We’re busy getting things ready for the holidays, and preparing the guest room and other spaces to ensure that our guests are happy and comfortable throughout their stay. Whether guests are visiting for the day, or coming for an extended visit, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Dangers Lurking in Luggage
Our guests may not have small children or pets in their homes and may not realize that their luggage could be an invitation for kids or pets to explore something out of the ordinary. They may have medications as well as health and beauty products that contain alcohol or other potentially dangerous chemicals in their bags. Children are inquisitive and may think mouthwash or citrus scented perfumes, lotions, and the like smell like something tasty. Pets may also become curious and try to taste items that are not healthy for them. Providing a space where guests can keep their belongings out of reach is a good idea and luggage and purses should be closed securely at all times.
“Guest Proofing”
Guests are obviously not as familiar with our homes as we are so a little “guest proofing” might be in order. This is especially true if guests have small children or bring along pets. Older visitors are more prone to slip and fall injuries, so move or secure any loose rugs or other potentially dangerous items. Make sure exterior stairs are not slippery and remind the kids to keep loose items off interior stairs and keep toys out of walkways.
More on Pets
Your guests might be frightened by your pets, or the opposite could be true. Many people are also allergic to various types of animals. Have a back up plan (like a friend or another relative who is willing to keep your pet(s) while you have guests) if the need arises. Most importantly, never leave children unattended with pets.
