Home Safety: Halloween and Harvest

This time of year is exciting, especially for little ones. Halloween is well on the way, soon to be followed by the major holidays of the year. Yay! This is a great time for family fun but don’t forget safety (check out Trick or Treat Home Safety Tips).

It’s never too early to start instructing kids on safety for various celebrations. There are many things to keep in mind when it comes to safe celebrating.

For Halloween, first, make sure your decorating is not dangerous. Halloween decorating has become almost as big as decorating for major holidays, such as Christmas. While you may like to get really involved in Halloween decorating, it pays to use caution.

Here is a great tip from Halloween.com:

“…try a battery powered light source or light sticks to light [jack-o-lanterns] instead of candles. This cuts down on the fire hazards, such as catching costumes or props on fire.”

Many people also like to decorate stairs and porches placing scary items near the door to frighten visitors. While it’s fun to create scary displays, it’s important to avoid tripping hazards. It does not take much for someone to lose his or her footing. It is quite easy to become injured in a fall. So, when decorating porches and stairs, be sure to keep the main walk area clear and safe.

Last but not least, always be aware of your surroundings. It is not a good idea to be home alone on Halloween answering the door for strangers. You have no idea who is hiding behind a mask or costume, and that can be creepyanyone into your home unless you are positive it is someone you know. If a person refuses to remove a mask or to identify him or her self, you should go inside, lock the door, and call the police. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
