Home Safety: Stay Safe While Staying Warm

As cold weather comes upon us, we need to apply caution when it comes to keeping warm.

Electric Heating Elements

It is advised to use heating pads on a medium setting instead of high. The intense feeling of the heating pad can keep you from realizing that your skin is being burned. It is also wise to only use a heating pad when you are fully awake. If you use one to warm your bed before climbing in, be sure to turn it off and unplug it before going to bed. Use it only on top of bedcovers. Never place anything over the top of an electric heating pad.

The same is true of electric blankets. Nothing should be placed on top of them while they are plugged in. This includes extra bedding. The electric blanket should be used only as the top layer. While you can sleep with an electric blanket on, it is advised that you do so on a low setting.

Free standing electric heaters can also cause injury or fire if not used properly. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely and always keep the unit away from the bed. It should be far enough away that the heating element won’t catch covers on fire, but also far enough away that it won’t fall onto bedding during the night. Always make sure a space heater is standing flat and is not placed in a pathway where it might get bumped.

Other Types of Heat

It is important to make sure that vents, chimneys, and stovepipes are free of blockage, in good repair and meet local codes. It is a good idea to have a fire inspector check it out if you have concerns. You can also hire a home inspector to do the job. It will require your time and it will cost you some money, but it’s worth it to know that your family will be safe.
