I recently read in a homeschool magazine that the number one reason for homeschooling was for religion. As a Christian and member of on and offline homeschool communities I see that all around me. Every now and then a secular homeschooler would flutter in yet soon flutter out feeling out of place. It has also been said that the number of black homeschoolers is on the rise yet still a minority in the world of homeschooling. Again, I see that in my own experience as well. Secular homeschoolers often feel out of place as do minority homeschoolers. So what if you are a minority and secular? Is there a place for you? Yvonne from Homegrown Mosaic is forging the way on a road less traveled by secular or minority homeschoolers. For this I am sure many are thankful.
Yvonne’s blog is filled with culture, resources for those looking to find their place, and honest posts which are both interesting and entertaining. She has a fresh way of communicating which is always honest with well formed thoughts and a personal flair. The blog is beautifully designed, easy to navigate, and filled with wonderful resources on her sidebars. She has set out to make a home for those outside the lines of an already outside the lines group: homeschoolers. Her tagline is “Where culture and homeschool collide”. Her tagline perfectly describes the overall theme of her blog. Yvonne works hard at making an open environment fit for all yet tailored to those underrepresented in the homeschool world. I have a wonderful time reading all her posts and checking out all the resources and blogs she lists and gives a shout out to. She writes a blog that will have anyone coming back for more. It is always a joy to read about a mom entering her first years of homeschooling.
