Teaching a child how to read can be a daunting task. As a homeschooler and writer about homeschooling topics, one of the most popular questions behind teaching math is teaching how to teach a child to read. Many are intimidated by the task. It does not make things easier that a student is to reading as a leaf to the wind. I had one child who taught himself how to read, one who struggled and currently one who gravitates to numbers, and one more who can “read” her name at two. So where’s a homeschooling mom to turn for advice in this area?
A great blog to consult for reading advice, tips and suggestions is Ready. Set. Read! This blog is written by Jackie, a former reading teacher turned stay at home mom. She tirelessly explains all aspects of how to teach a child who to read on her blog. Her content is focused on child literacy and promoting a love for reading. Her passion for children and children’s literature comes through in every post. She connects learning with doing which truly inspires learning. Jackie covers a wide variety of topics associated with reading such as how to choose a book, reader strategies, letter work, preschoolers and more.
My favorite thing about Ready. Set. Read!, is the activities she shares to get kids involved in a book. In the “Start” section of her blog you will find fun activities which coordinate with popular children’s books. In her section called “iLove Letters” you learn how to make letters jump off the page and into a child’s hands. I believe one great way to teach letters is to use them as manipulatives. Jackie will teach you how to do this. All of her experience will benefit you in teaching your child how to read and enjoy books. Once you begin reading her blog you will breathe a sigh of relief and say, “I CAN teach my child how to read.”
