Home Study Interviews Part 1

When the application is complete, the references are in; the safety check is complete so now what? Now the fun begins! You will have a couple’s interview and an individual interview.

When you process the application you will be asked to write letters individually about your spouse, your marriage, your extended family. In the letter they want to know about your spouse’s good features, and their bad ones. When the couple’s interview starts you will be asked about items that are in your letter. They will want to know who manages the money, which one makes the hard choices, who does what chores. Some of the questions will seem odd and may seem to be non-sense questions however; they will get to an end point of your family.

The whole purpose of your interviews is to see how the parental dynamics will be. They want to see if both parents are on the same page when it comes to discipline, religious beliefs, and family values. They will also ask a tough one… why you made the decision to bring children into your family.

The Social Worker why you chose adoption, if fertility issues are present, if you were like us where you decide to adopt as the one and only way you wanted to bring children into your family.

The Social Worker will want to know how your extended family feels about your choice. You may be surprised that some couples have extended families that are not on board with the choice to adopt. They may not understand why you are not having biological children; they may have misconceptions about adoption. It is very important to discuss with your extended family why you and your spouse have chosen this path to your family. We had an issue with our extended family where one side of our family could not understand why we did not want to have children the good old fashioned way. We even had one member of our family say that you cannot love an adopted child the same as you can a biological child.

As a Mom who has been in the ER for the last 2 days with one of my children there is no difference in the type of LOVE I have for my kids. I would give up my life for my kids.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
