Home Decor: Warming up a Contemporary Space

The image many people picture when they discuss contemporary design, is a space that looks and feels like a hotel suite instead of a home. While clutter is bad for design, there are ways to make a space feel more “lived in” and more inviting without making it look messy or cluttered. If you love the look, but not the sometimes “sterile” feeling, try these tips:

Perfection is Boring

Everything does not have to be perfect in your space at all times. Toss the throw over your chair and let it fall where it may instead of arranging it precisely. Reading a good book? Leave it on the end table, or leave a magazine open on your coffee table, along with your reading glasses.

Add Some Life

A few plants or bowls of fruit or nuts will add life to a room and make the space feel homier. Don’t have time to care for plants? Go silk. While few professional designers approve of artificial plants, there are selections available that are so realistic they can be incorporated into upscale decor without taking anything away from it. If you don’t care for silk plants, treat yourself to fresh cut flowers occasionally.

Add a Punch of Color

If your design plan is neutral or tone on tone, a punch of color will immediately warm up your space. A great new print or piece of artwork will not only add warmth but will often become a conversation piece, as will an exquisite carpet, which can also help anchor a seating area and make it more inviting.

Add Different Textures

If your space is one of clean lines and monochromatic tones, and you want to keep the effect while still adding some warmth, opt for texture. Raw silk, leather, tapestry, wicker baskets, wooden elements, stained glass and other assorted textures will help create warmth as well as visual interest.
