If you will be attending a baby shower for someone special soon and you want to do something nice as far as a gift, you might think about making something homemade. Although store bought gifts are always nice, there is something very special about a homemade gift. After all, the mother and father-to-be know you put extra time and effort in the gift, giving something from the heart and home.
To help you get started, we wanted to provide you with some options for a homemade baby shower gift. Now, if you have time and are great at crocheting or quilting, that is one thing but even the small gifts would be highly cherished. Therefore, it is not necessarily size that counts. Instead, think of the mother and father, along with the new life about to enter the world – what things would they need, use, want that you can make?
When my kids were little, I made homemade baby food. I would make it, pour it into ice cube trays, and then when suppertime came, pop out a cube, prepare it, and feed the kids. The size of the ice cube trays was perfect and the process both easy and convenient. You can find hundreds of excellent homemade food recipes for babies on the internet or perhaps you have some of your own. An excellent gift idea would be to create a recipe book, consisting of nothing but homemade baby food.
If you want to offer something such as a fleece blanket but cannot sew, you can still make one without ever making a stitch. In this case, purchase fleece from your local fabric store, choosing something that would go with the baby’s room. Typically, you would need about three quarter to one yard of material. Then, cut two-inch strips on the edges of the fleece, tying them together so there is now a fringe. Best of all, these blankets will last forever, they are machine washable, and they never fray.
You might also visit a hobby store, looking for an inexpensive and plain picture frame. Then, choose beading, fabric, or puff paint to create your own design. Let’s say you wanted something fun that would hold a baby’s picture but also look great in the nursery. You could use soft yellow fabric to cover the front of the frame and glued to the back. Then on the bottom or top corner, attach with a hot glue gun, a miniature stuffed giraffe, teddy bear, racecar, or some other fun item. On the bottom or top center of the frame, you could use thin lined craft paint to write the date of the baby shower.
Finally, take a white colored piece of cardstock, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches in size. You will also need an 8.5 x 11-inch frame and a black writing pen. From the computer, perform a Google search for a baby’s footprint, handprint, or something else representing a newborn. Print this out in black and white and glue to the cardstock so it is sturdy. Then, frame the picture and on the back, write a special note or poem to the mother and father of the baby.
