Homemade Back-to-School Gift

Giving your child’s new teacher a gift on the first day of school may seem a bit Eddie Haskell-ish, but some families make it an annual tradition. If you are looking for a fun project for your youngster to complete at home and give to his teacher on the first day of the new school year, then consider making this incredibly cute apple craft:

COLORFUL APPLES

Materials:

Wax paper

Crayons

Manual pencil sharpener (with large hole)

Iron

Ironing board

White computer paper or brown paper bag

Construction paper

Scissors

Glue stick

Directions:

Mom, dad or another adult should plug in the iron and cover the ironing board with the white computer paper or brown paper bag. Set the iron to medium-high.

Tear off a piece of wax paper that’s a bit longer than it is wide and fold it in half. Then unfold.

Sharpen the crayons with the pencil sharpener and let the shavings drop onto half of the wax paper.

Once you have a few good size piles of yellow, green, blue, and red (or whatever colors your child desires) shavings, refold the waxed paper. Hint: Be sure to fold the edges of the wax paper, so the melted crayons don’t leak out when you iron it.

Place the wax paper containing the shavings on the ironing board and cover with more computer paper or a brown paper bag.

Iron for about 10 seconds or longer, if necessary. Make sure all of the wax has melted before removing from heat. The longer you iron the wax paper, the more the colors will mix.

Let sit about 30 seconds to cool.

Stack and fold two pieces of construction paper in half. Cut out a half apple shape. The shape can be as simple as a circle with a small stem on top or you can make it fancier by cutting the top of the circle a bit wider. You can also add a leaf by unfolding your apple and cutting a leaf on one side of the stem.

Unfold the construction paper and you’ll have two pieces of paper with matching apples in the middle of them.

Apply glue around one of the pieces of construction paper.

Place your waxed paper wax mixture on the middle of the page.

Apply glue on the second piece of the construction paper and lay it over top of the first so the wax mixture is sandwiched between the construction paper, and the apple shapes are lined up.

Allow glue to dry thoroughly before presenting colorful apple to child’s teacher.
