We were in our local parade today as part of our preschool. One of the hits with the preschooler set in the crowd was the bubbles. Since my daughter and I play in a band that goes to parades all summer, I’ve decided that I need to get an automatic bubble-blower hat for my head that will make bubbles while I play and march. Off to check Ebay….
Creating big bubbles, tiny bubbles, and lots and lots of bubbles is one of my daughter’s favorite summertime activities. If you also have a child who adores bubbles, you don’t need to remain chained to the dollar store lineup buying packages of bubble mix all summer. It is quite easy to make your own, and while you’re at it you can create wacky bubble blowers too.
To make bubble mix, you really just need to mix dish soap and water: two tablespoons of soap to a cup of water. However, this doesn’t always do for large and sturdy bubbles. If you want bubbles that will really knock your socks off, add a tablespoon of glycerin to the mix as well. This will create bubbles that don’t pop quite as easily as the plain dish soap variety.
To make a giant bubble wand, use materials like old, smooth coat hangers or even willow branches to create a big circle. Put out a pan of bubble mix and dip, swing, and watch the bubbles form. If you don’t want a big pan of bubble mix in your yard, create small wands using pipe cleaners. Any object that has holes in it can become a bubble-making machine. Experiment and have fun with your bubbles!
To blow bigger bubbles, slowly move the wand around your body or have your preschooler do the same. Try to move the wand so that the wind blows into the forming bubble and you will get gloriously large bubbles.
