My kids love those little portable yogurt tubes known as GoGurt (on the go yogurt) and usually beg for some whenever we are in the grocery store. I very rarely buy them, though, for a couple of reasons. The first is that they tend to be loaded with artificial flavors, artificial colors and an abundance of sugar. The second is that they tend to be expensive.
As I said, I do occasionally buy the GoGurts, but only if coupons and sales bring the price down to almost free and the kids have been eating healthy that week.
As it happens, and the reason for this post, I came across the idea of making homemade yogurt tubes. What a genius idea! By making a homemade version, I could control the ingredients as well as the cost.
The basic idea, thanks to Once a Month Mom is this: You use a Food Saver to make little tubes that you can then fill with yogurt (or juice, or pudding, etc). After the tubes are filled, you can seal them off and then store in the refrigerator or freezer.
Of course, there is some cost associated with purchasing the food saver and the roll of film that goes with it, but Once a Month Mom assures us that it is still cost effective. If you make your own homemade yogurt, that cost is lowered even more.
While the homemade yogurt tubes may still cost more than the commercial GoGurts using coupons and sales, there would be no comparison with ingredients. I could purchase organic, hormone free yogurt and the cost would be much less than the equivalent prepared version, if I could even find it.
I’ve heard so many good things about the Food Saver, and this may just be the thing that sends me over the top to buying one.
