Homemade Graduation Party Favors

left

Not for nothing, but these are not the kind of favors I’ll be handing out at my daughter’s high school graduation party.

Fortunately, you don’t have to choose controversial or costly items to hand out to guests at a commencement party. Most of the people attending your student’s shindig are there to reminisce about the many milestones they’ve accomplished in high school and chat about what the future holds as they head off to college.

The focus of the party should be on spending quality item with one another; not worrying about what types of trinkets should be dispersed at the end of the night. Bottom line: Keep it simple with these easy ideas:

Sweet Treats: If you love to bake, then put your passion to good use making cookie or candy party favors. This time of year you can easily find cookie cutters in shape of graduation gowns, diplomas and mortarboards. There are also cutters that spell out the words “Congratulations” and “Class of 2012.” Find a recipe that your guests will enjoy (e.g. chocolate chip, sugar or oatmeal) and decorate the cookies with frosting in the guest of honor’s school colors. If you are feeling slightly ambitious, you can make cookie pop versions, place them in plastic bags and tie ribbon around them along with a little tag thanking each guest for attending the graduation party.

Bookmarks: This is a simple homemade party favor that can be put to good use by college-bound party guests. Simply cut cardstock into bookmark shapes. Next, punch a hole at the top of the bookmark, and then tie string through the hole to make a tassel. You can further embellish the bookmark with graduation-themed stickers and stamps, as well as sequins, gemstones, and glitter.

Candles: Handcraft candles in your student’s school colors using easy-to-use kits found at craft stores. Most kits come with molds, plus all the ingredients needed to make votive candles. Once the candles are made, place them in little boxes or wrap them in fabric bags. The keepsake favors can be sent home with guests at the end of the night.
