The pinecone owls are a cute way to get your family into the Halloween spirit. While the pinecone turkeys make for unique place card holders during your Thanksgiving get together. If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year consider having a separate craft table set up for the kids so they can construct the pinecone turkeys while the real bird cooks in the oven. The simple project is a great way to pass the time and the kids will love that they get to leave your home with more than just a full stomach.
HALLOWEEN PINECONE OWL
Materials:
Pinecone
Black eyelash trim
Scraps of yellow felt
Googly eyes
Pipe cleaners
Rubber cement or hot glue
Directions:
Glue eyelash trim to the back of large googly eyes.
Glue the eyes to the pinecone.
Cut a small triangle out of the yellow felt and glue between the owl’s eyes.
Embellish by gluing pipe cleaners for feet and/or eyeglasses. You can also get fancy by applying glue to pinecone body and dipping “owl” into glitter or sequins. Or consider gluing cotton balls onto pinecone in a pattern that resembles feathers.
Note: Adults should always be present when hot glue gun is being used.
THANKSGIVING PINECONE TURKEYS
Materials:
Sphere shaped pinecones (one to one an half inches diameter)
Red pipe cleaner (chenille stem)
Orange pipe cleaner (chenille stem)
Five other pipe cleaners (in a variety of colors-chenille stem)
Glue (craft, wood, or all-purpose that dries clear)
Wire Cutter
Directions:
On the pipe cleaners cut the bumps apart in each chenille wire. Using wire cutters, cut in the center of each place where the wire narrows down—you want the bumps whole and fluffy.
Take one bump from the red pipe cleaner and shape into the letter “S.” Glue this to the top portion of the cone with the bump protruding somewhat above the cone for the head of the turkey.
Take one bump from the orange pipe cleaner and shape into the letter “V.” Glue this under the bottom portion of the cone for the legs and feet.
Take five other bumps from the remaining pipe cleaners and carefully bend them so the narrow ends can be twisted together leaving the puffy end somewhat rounded. Glue as many of these to the flatter stemmed end of the pinecone remembering to use glue only on the twisted end of the chenille wire. These will be the turkey’s feathers.
Let dry and then adjust the chenille pipe cleaners to make your turkey look more realistic, e.g. shape orange “V” pipe cleaner to form feet and spread out and fluff up turkey’s feathers.
