Homeschool Activity: Geocaching

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Have you considered geocaching? I have heard about it for years and I was always interested but until recently I have not done it. Are you wondering what geocaching is?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. –www.geocaching.com/guide

Ever since my first Indiana Jones movie I desired to seek hidden treasure. Since I doubt I will find myself traveling the globe seeking the Holy Grail, I can satisfy the treasure hunter in me by going geocaching with the kids. It is a super fun activity that profits the pursuit of homeschooling as much as the pursuit of adventure. We found our first cache at a park near us. The kids were thrilled!

I am directionally challenged so I was hoping this new hobby would help me as well as make directions and exploration fun for the kids. It is easy to begin and you and get your feet wet slowly. We started out by using a simple map online for the park in particular we were exploring. The next adventure will involve a GPS app I downloaded to my phone. There are many apps that will aid you in your geocaching adventures. Many are free but the one with the highest reviews is $9.99. Since I have a way of jumping in with both feet, I went ahead and purchased it. I cannot tell you much about it now since I have not had a chance to use it yet. I will be sure to report back with our findings.

We are getting ready for our geocaching day in much the same way we do for a nature walk. The kids will bring their compasses, backpacks, and we will take plenty of pictures. We will return with stories of adventure soon!
