First Grade Homeschool Basics

Some time back, Valorie wrote What Your First Grader Should Know: Language Arts. If you follow this guide, you will be able to map out a first grade reading curriculum for your child.

She also wrote: What Your First Grader Should Know Math. This guide will easily take you through the first grade with little more than a workbook from the dime store and the knowledge in your head.

What Your First Grader Should Know Science: teaches first grade basics like animals, pets, plants, habitats, and more. You can follow the lessons outlined in this guide with the help of internet website, trips to the science museum and field trips.

For First Grade History, World Book Encyclopedia Recommends the following lessons:

  • Holidays Traditions and Customs like Christmas, Hanukkah, Independence Day, etc.
  • American Heritage such immigration and mixing of cultures.
  • Different Cultures during different times
  • Family, school, neighborhood, community including neighborhood helpers like police, firemen, crossing guards, ect.
  • Farm and zoo
  • Jobs and careers
  • Social skills and responsibilities
  • Basic geography terms
  • Reading as simple neighborhood map

I believe all of these things can be taught by reading picture books to your children and as your children learn to read, they can read these books back to you.

Alternately I prefer teaching first graders history beginning in Ancient times my favorite tool is The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. You can read about this approach and a few others here.

Miscellaneous first grade lessons recommended are personal hygiene, dental, eating habits, exercise and rest, diseases and colds, dressing, and safety rules.
