Homeschool con: when friends go back to school

This is a difficult year end for us as homeschoolers. Both of my kids are highschool level next year as are most of their friends. For many of these friends, because we live in a somewhat good area are returning to public school or private school in the fall.

In areas where schools are poor it is more likely that parents will begin homeschooling in middle school and high school. In good areas, parents will homeschool in lower grades to give kids and academic headstart, and then return them to public school.

So right now we are saying goodbye or see ‘ya around to a good population of our homeschool highschoolers. So many are returning to school this year, that our homeschool program location may be moving to combine with a another program where there is a higher population of homeschoolers.

This means more driving for me and it means making all new friends in the fall for my kids. I guess this is not different than it would be for a kid moving public schools, still, we were used to our local homeschool community, and because of the age of my kids and our friends this is all changing.

I guess we could choose for my kids to go to public or private school as well next year, but this is not their desire. My kids want to accelerate at their own pace and take a year off before going to college, which they will still probably enter a little early. Who am I to change their plans just because their friends are taking a different approach.

I guess this just proves that each homeschooler walks to the beat of his or her own drum. This means we will lose contact with some people and also make new friends each and every year.
