Homeschool Glossary (Books Parents Should Read) S-Th

As I mentioned in the introduction, new homeschooling parents should learn as much about homeschooling as possible by reading many different sources. Here continues my Homeschool Glossary of books parents should read.

So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling: Second Edition: Fifteen Families Show How You Can Do It by Lisa Whelchel (Paperback – Nov 10, 2006)

Written by the former child star of “Facts of life”, now writer and homeschooling mother of three, this book gives fifteen real stories of homeschoolers. This book gives a wide range of different homeschoolers and circumstances that will give you, the reader a good idea of what homeschooling is like. This book also has an up to date resourse directory.

Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling by John Holt, Patrick Farenga, and Pat Farenga (Paperback – April 15, 2003)

This book has been called “an unofficial treatise for the homeschooling movement”. This book is a commentary on the inefficiencies of traditional schooling, and shows you that “there’s got to be a better way”.

The Everything Homeschooling Book by Sherri Linsenbach (Paperback – April 2003)

This book holds everything you ever wanted to know about homeschooling, and then some. This book is written by a former teacher and homeschooling parent who also founded homeschoolfun.com. The book included information on stated departments of education, religious and secular homeschooling, curriculum sources and programs, homeschooling multiple children, and information on designing lesson plans.

The First Year of Homeschooling Your Child: Your Complete Guide to Getting Off to the Right Start by Linda Dobson (Paperback – May 24, 2001)

I read this book before I started homeschooling, and have to admit that it really did put me at ease. This is one of those few homeschooling books that is not heavily “Christ Led” so those homeschooling strictly for religious reasons are not crazy about it. It does however cover homeschool styles, myths, deschooling, and more.

The Future of Home Schooling: A New Direction for Value-based Home Education by Michael Farris (Paperback – May 25, 1997)

I love this book. It helps to inspire parents to make the most out of the homeschooling experience and to use resources available. One of the founders of the HSLDA writes this book where homeschoolers are encouraged to use a more classical route of education and to continue on to college.
