Kinesthetic learner -A kinesthetic learner learns by doing, and while doing. A kinesthetic learner is in constant motion and can be labeled ADHD because it may look like they are not paying attention during instruction.
Learning Methods (learning styles) – Everyone learns in a different way. Learning methods focus on the different ways people process information. My learning the way your child learns, you will be able to teach them in the most efficient and affective way for them. A child’s temperament and weaknesses are also evaluated when determining learning methods or styles. To learn more about learning methods, you should become familiar with the theory of learning styles and multiple intelligences. Some learning methods or styles include kinesthetic, auditory, and visual.
Manipulative – Manipulatives are used to facilitate hands on learning. Used in conjunction with a math lesson, for example, they help a child to better understand a concept. A manipulative can be as simple as using a pie or pizza to demonstrate fractions, or pennies to count. You can also purchase manipulatives like Cuisenaire Rods. You can also find virtual manipulatives online. While you can use manipulatives for many subjects, they are mostly utilized for math. This forum thread talks about using math manipulatives.
Multiple Intelligences – Multiple intelligences is another way to describe learning styles or learning methods. “The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are: Linguistic intelligence (word smart), Logical-mathematical intelligence (number/reasoning smart), Spatial intelligence (picture smart), Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (body smart), Musical intelligence (music smart), Interpersonal intelligence (people smart), Intrapersonal intelligence (self smart), and Naturalist intelligence (nature smart).” ~Thomasarmstrong.com
