This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system.
According to Nevada State Law, children are legally home schooled when the parents provide written proof that a sufficient instructional program is being taught at home.
Initially, parents need to file with the local board of trustees, the following:
* full name of the child
* name and address of the parents of the child and address where the child resides
* a contact phone number for the parent if available
* the child’s birth date
* a signed statement verifying that the biographical information is correct and that the parent assumes full responsibility in making sure the child receives ‘equivalent instruction.’
* an optional statement that protects the confidentiality of the letter of intent
* an educational plan that includes proposed educational goals as well as the materials to be used
* a statement initialed by the parent stating that the parent has either one year of home schooling experience OR a teaching credential from any state, OR has read and understands the appropriate section of Nevada state law
* a copy of the child’s birth certificate or other identification sufficient to establish identity
* the name and city of the most recent Nevada public school attended if applicable
(In subsequent years, parents do not need to include the last four points from above.)
Compulsory Attendance: A child between the ages of 7 and 17.
Required Days: The child must be in attendance for the equivalent of 180 days.
Required Subjects: A course of study comparable to public schools including language arts, science, math and social studies, arts, music and physical education.
There are no teacher qualifications, nor is standardized testing required.
