Hot Spring Flings

More than a dozen people have been killed due to recent wicked weather spreading across the United States. Meanwhile, winter storm warnings are in effect for the Central and Midwestern portions of the country where up to 8 inches could fall in places like Chicago… and spring officially begins in just a few hours. If Old Man Winter’s grip on the country hasn’t got you considering taking a spring fling to a warmer climate then I don’t know what will.

If you are looking for a sunny escape from bad weather consider the following sunny locales:

CARIBBEAN

Spring is in the air on the tropical island of Antigua and its smaller sister island, Barbuda. Down there spring marks the official start of the sailing season. In April several annual events, including the Classic Yacht Regatta (April 19–24) and Antigua Sailing Week (April 29–May 4), one of the top regattas in the world and the biggest in the Caribbean, draw thousands to the area. If you prefer to stay on land you can catch a tan on one of the island’s sugar-white-sand beaches or tour one of the many historical attractions. The island is also home to fabulous resorts and upscale restaurants. The flight from New York to Antigua is about 4.5 hours; less if you are flying from Washington, D.C. or Atlanta.

DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

If you are looking to getaway to a warmer climate the vast open spaces, arid mountains, rolling sand dunes, and old ghost towns of Death Valley might just be your ideal spring fling destination. During March and April this underrated national park comes alive with wildflowers, which you can view minus the sweltering summer highs that soar above 120 degrees. The park spans 3.3 million square feet and is home to a slew of natural wonders. While there you can hike to the lowest place in North America (almost 300 feet below sea level), surf a sand dune, and cool down at the upscale Furnace Creek Inn.

CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA

Catalina Island is located 22 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California and is a popular year-round destination. However, crowds are smallest during the spring. The island offers a temperate Mediterranean climate and spectacular sights from its only real city Avalon. Catalina Island is a place many come for serious R&R and it helps that the mode of transport is by golf cart rather than car. Spend the day touring the grand 1920s circular dance hall known as the Casino or rent some gear and scuba dive in the crystal-clear Pacific.
