When the heat and humidity is high, it’s hard to work up the effort to do something creative with your hair. Here are some tips and tricks for good hair days even when the weather makes it hard.
Summer Hair Care Tips:
- Try a leave-in conditioner if you’ll be outside most of the day (like at the beach or poolside). Work the conditioner into damp hair and let the heat of the day help it penetrate.
- Skip the blow-dryer — it can leave your hair frizzy. A super-absorbent towel may not get you all the way dry, but it’ll save your hair from frizzing out.
- Redken makes a hair lotion with UV protection built in — you might want to try it if you’ll be in the sun a lot this summer.
- A silicone-based hair lotion can help protect colored hair from fading in the sun.
- Rinse your hair often. After a dip in the pool, after a swim at the beach… fresh water will wash away the salt and chlorine that can leave your hair dry and brittle or fade color.
Cool Summer Styles:
- A ponytail doesn’t have to be plain. Use a pretty barrette or scrunchie to make your ponytail look pretty! You can even tease your hair up in the front to give a little lift.
- Use a little bit of gel or mousse or styling cream on your hair from roots to tips. Slide a wide headband over the top and let it sit on the crown of your head. It’ll keep your bangs out of the way on hot days.
- Part your hair on one side, then gather it all back into a low ponytail. Wrap the tail up into a bun. You can use gel to keep things smooth at the top of your head if you like.
- Cover your hair with a light scarf — it’s cooler than a baseball cap and far more stylish.
The curse of short hair is that when it’s hot and sticky, I have to be extra creative to get it off my neck. Right now, I can scrape my hair into two stubby little pigtails to get it up in the back… and two more pigtails in the front to take care of my bangs. It’s not pretty, but it does the trick on those sticky hot days!
