Remember the Watergate Hotel? It became a Washington landmark during the infamous Nixon scandal. The hotel is about to undergo a major facelift, but before it does you have the chance to get in on some incredible savings.
No, the hotel is not offering $2 room rates; rather, the hotel is having a massive blow-out sale as it tries to get rid of existing beds, sofas, silver teapots… even toilets to prepare for the renovation.
Don’t worry bargain hunters; you still have plenty of time to get in on the action. The sale began earlier today and will last until all the items are sold. Hotel managers say they expect thousands of former guests (and those who simply love a great deal) to bid on the hotel’s items. Some hotel executives are estimating the sale will yield $700,000.
Some of the items up for sale include wooden desks for $85 and frying pans for $6. There are also listings for $100 beds and $65 mirrors. Altogether, the hotel is trying to sell off more than 20,000 items, including books, wineglasses, drapes, Jacuzzis, a baby grand piano and 13 Greek-style columns. If you are interested in adding a bit of history to your own home you should know property managers are charging a $10 admission fee during the first three days to deter sightseers.
I’ve never been to a hotel liquidation sale, but I can see how this one would draw people who would normally shy away from spending money on items that have been used by goodness knows how many strangers. After all, it is the Watergate Hotel. The infamous building opened in 1967 and is part of a complex of six buildings, including one where the 1972 burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters occurred—-yes, the same crime that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation. Four of the burglars stayed at Watergate Hotel and since then it has become a must-see Washington tourist attraction. In addition, the hotel has gained fame for catering to a host of A-list celebrities including, Liberace, Katharine Hepburn, Andy Warhol and John Wayne.
Once the sale is complete renovation on the hotel will begin. By this time next year property managers say the hotel will be transformed a luxury resort featuring premier rooms and suites, including a $2,000-a-night penthouse.
