He’s made headlines for his acting, his looks, his choice of company and his sense of style. Now, one of PEOPLE magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive is making the news for building houses. Yesterday, Brad Pitt joined forces in Western India with former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn as part of a Habitat for Humanity program.
According to Habitat for Humanity’s website, Pitt headed to the town of Lonavla to join the Carters and volunteers to help build a new house for Aziz and Sadhiya Sheikh. With masses of paparazzi documenting his every move, Pitt laid cement blocks that will help finish the outside of the house. In one photo Pitt was shown at the construction site in a white shirt, dark jeans, goggles, gloves, and a baseball cap adjusting a window grill. Another picture shows him cementing bricks into place.
He certainly has the means to jet off to far reaches of the globe to lend a hand, but in this case Pitt didn’t have to travel far to help those in need. The actor is in India with Angelina Jolie filming “A Mighty Heart,” about American journalist Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002.
Besides the Carters, former Miss World and Miss India Diana Hayden, and Australian cricket player Steve Waugh joined Pitt at the Habitat site. According to local news reports, Pitt “worked under the hot sun and talked to fellow volunteers for about half an hour,” which may not sound like a long time, but if you consider the number of celebrities (and non-celebrities) who would never consider swinging a hammer or laying cement bricks for a homeless family, it’s an effort worth at least some coverage. Not that Pitt isn’t a media magnet as it is. Last month, he and his girlfriend Angelina Jolie formed the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to give away $2 million, to be evenly divided between the Global Action for Children and Doctors Without Borders, to help families affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.
