Today I’m not writing a typical housekeeping blog, there will be no tips or hints or product reviews, instead, imagine trying to keep your home clean when you are seriously ill. Many women are very ill but still have to find a way to maintain their home or, if they are unable to, they continue to worry about it when they should be focused on getting better.
Today I want to talk about a very special company that provides a service to cancer patients. It’s called Cleaning For A Reason and they clean the homes of cancer patients, for free. This nonprofit foundation was started in 2006 by Debbie Sardone, who worked in the housecleaning industry for 29 years, owning her own cleaning company in Texas. Through their sponsors they are able to offer four free housecleanings, one a month for four months, so their clients can focus on their health and not their house.
According to their website, the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2011 there will be 750,000 first time cancer diagnosis in women over the age of 18. This service will be invaluable to many women. If you have cancer or know someone who does, check out their website, they may be able to help you. Everyone is asked to fill out an application and the need is great so at times they may be overwhelmed with people who need their assistance.
The website also lists the areas they serve and the cleaning companies that donate their services. In Utah, where I live, there are six companies that participate. Of course, more are always needed so if you know someone who runs a cleaning service this is a wonderful way for them to give to the community.
If you are fortunate enough not to be touched by cancer you can make a donation, they also have a shop where you can buy products that have the Cleaning For A Reason logo on them, and every purchase helps provide women with free housecleaning. The companies that do the cleaning are not paid for their services, they donate everything, because they care about women with cancer, so anything you can do, no matter how small, will help.
