Some household items that are meant to make life easier do just that. I love a good gadget and the ones that work are just the best thing since sliced bread. Speaking of sliced bread, have you actually seen those little boxes invented for that purpose? My grandmother used to bake bread from scratch and refused to eat “store bought” bread. However, she could not cut an even slice for any amount of money. My aunt bought her a handmade, antique bread slicing guide (as they are known today).
It was a simple wooden box with evenly spaced slots cut into the sides. Slide a loaf of bread into the box and simply run the knife through the slots for nice, even slices of bread. Modern versions are often made of acrylic and sometimes include a breadbox for storing bread. They are handy for those who like to make homemade bread. Makes a nice gift for the friend with a bread machine.
The bread slicing guide is one of those household helpers that works great and I can’t think of a single drawback to using one. Maybe simplicity is the key to great gadgets.
Another great find, although this one does have some issues, is a dryer diverter. I’ve often wondered if there wasn’t a way to re-use that warm air, so kudos to the inventor for such a great idea.
When I first learned of the availability of dryer diverters, I also thought it would be a terrific way to add a bit more humidity back to the dry, heated, air. However, do keep in mind that moist air can and does lead to mold and mildew. This is especially going to be a concern if you have a large family or otherwise do a great deal of clothes drying. Also, it’s not wise to use a dryer diverter if you have a gas dryer. Gas dryers need to be vented outdoors.
These are just two out of many, many cool things meant to make life easier. Even items that have some issues can still be handy, as long as you are aware of potential problems and use them accordingly.
