Household Uses for Olive Oil – Part 1

I am always looking for new uses for regular household products. I had a friend tell me the other day that the best thing to use to wash hardwood floors is tea. I haven’t tried that yet, but I did find some cool uses for olive oil.

Paint Removal

That’s right, you can use olive oil to clean paint off your hands. Just rub your hands with a little olive oil and salt or sugar (to give it a bit of grit) and the paint will come right off. As an added bonus, your skill be soft.

Makeup Remover

Last Halloween, I went to a party as Lindsay Lohan. I had a ton of eye makeup and mascara on. When I tried to take it all off with soap and water, it didn’t work. I had to scrub and ended up bruising under my eyes from all the scrubbing. I wish I had known that just a touch of olive oil on a cotton pad could have wiped it all off!

Furniture Polish

Tired of using some potentially toxic furniture polish? Give a little olive oil a shot. Just add a teaspoon to a quarter cup of lemon juice and it will gently clean wood.

Moisturizer

I need to try this. I’ve read that olive oil can help moisturize your skin, but it can also reduce wrinkles and it doesn’t clog your pores. You can also add a couple of tablespoons in your bathwater to help moisturize all over.

Shoe Polish

Granted, not as many people today polish their shoes, but if you do and you happen to be out of polish, put a little olive oil on a soft cloth and polish your leather shoes.

Hinge Lubricant

If you have a squeaky hinge, put some olive oil in a spray bottle and squirt a little on there. The olive oil will lubricate the hinge – no more squeak!
