Visibility is important in the world of business, and it can be a particular challenge to home-based business that might exist and operate in isolation. Businesses started in someone’s basement or garage, or a small business operated out of the corner of a spare bedroom–don’t have the automatic visibility of a storefront or large corporation.
In this day and age, you don’t have to have a large physical building to develop a presence and a visibility in the business market. However, it does take attention to marketing and promotions if you want to become more visible. This means tapping into things like word-of-mouth, logos, branding, and integrated marketing–just to name a few standard business promotion practices. If you want to be more visible, you have to create an “image” for your business that people can digest.
So, what can that “image” be for a small, home-based business? Well the laws of branding can be a little flexible. You might want a public face for your business, or a logo or a certain name–regardless of what you choose, making it more visible means getting that image out on everything you send out and getting it in the public eye as much as possible. Think creatively–of course there is the web site and the traditional marketing materials, but visibility could also include public marketing (bus signs, ball fields, etc.), the side of an automobile, programs, television, newspapers, etc. Some small businesses with small budgets find that doing a two-week visibility blitz every few months boosts their visibility without them needing to do constant advertising and marketing.
By asking yourself how you can make your business more visible, you can open all sorts of doors to creative marketing and find new ways to get your business message out there in front of the right market.
