Some women claim that they knew that they were pregnant at the precise moment that conception occurred. I am not one of them. With both of my pregnancies, I was none the wiser until almost two months along.
With my first pregnancy, I first became suspicious when my husband and I went out to breakfast one day. I love the taste of coffee, but on that day I thought that my coffee tasted absolutely revolting. I asked my husband whether his coffee tasted funny and he said that it did not. Discussion turned to why I was all of a sudden turned off by coffee, and he suggested that I might be pregnant. I thought about it for a minute and then realized that I could not remember when I had last had my period. We stopped and got a pregnancy test at the drug store on the way home. Sure enough, the coffee had been just fine. It was my pregnant taste buds that were a little off.
The second time around, I had no idea that I was pregnant until I experienced a very unusual decrease in appetite. I love to eat, and if I don’t feel like eating then something is definitely amiss. On a hunch, I picked up a pregnancy test and sure enough we were pregnant again. I got an appointment with a midwife immediately, and as we were discussing symptoms she helped me to understand why I did not feel like eating. It was my version of morning sickness – no vomiting, just nausea masquerading as lack of appetite. At that point, I realized that that explained why I had been disappointed in all of the food that I had eaten during my vacation a few weeks prior. We visit the same place every year and at all of my favorite restaurants, the food just did not seem as good as I had remembered it to be. Pregnant tastebuds were at work yet again.
