Does anyone else have this problem? I live in an apartment in Southern California. I’ve lived in various complexes for the past seven years and have never had a single knock on my door on Halloween night.
Now that I have kids of my own, it’s made me have to find alternative trick-or-treating places for them. Sure, we could get in the car and go to other neighborhoods. And sometimes we do. Sometimes we head to the local shopping mall or outdoor plaza center and trick-or-treat there. But it’s not the same.
That said, you’d be amazed at the number of families that forgo traditional trick-or-treating in favor of shopping plaza’s these days. At the place we usually go, you can barely move there are so many children scrambling around.
I remember when I was a kid. All we had to do was go out our front door and we knew we could go to any house within walking distance. But in an apartment, there are no porch lights signaling who does or doesn’t want you to knock. There are just a whole lot of doors.
This year, the residents at our complex put signs on the doors if they were interested in having trick-or-treaters. I’m anxious to put my kids in their costumes and finally let them knock on some neighbor’s doors. And you can be sure my sign is on the door too, beckoning trick-or-treaters to knock. After all, a bowl full of candy is supposed to disappear on Halloween night. When it doesn’t it is doomed to end up in one place…my hips. Hopefully this year, it’ll get eaten by little hands instead.
I’m curious, if you live in an apartment, what do you do for trick-or-treating? Drop me a note and tell me your story.
