How Hot is it where You Live?

During July, we had surprisingly nice weather here. It was warm and sometimes rather hot during the day, but nothing compared to the July heat we are used to. The nights were unusually cool and comfortable, and believe it or not, there were a few evenings that were downright chilly.

Well, August seems to be returning things to normal, and it is as hot as… well, a typical August day. Yesterday, temperatures were in the high nineties, and the heat index was around 104. Today, temperatures are expected to hover around 100 degrees, but coupled with the high humidity, the heat index is supposed to be 108.

Whoever created air conditioners was a genius!

Heat advisories have been issued along with warnings to stay indoors if at all possible, and to conserve energy. To avoid loss of power, we’re asked to keep items that require electricity to a minimum while air conditioners are working overtime during the hottest parts of the day. On days like these, we sometimes suffer outages. I’m praying today isn’t one of those days.

What about you? What is the weather like where you live? Is it typical August or is it warmer, cooler, wetter, dryer? What do you and your families do to stay cool on hot summer days? For now, I think I’ll make a big pitcher of iced tea but the kids have already asked if we need to break out the ice cream maker sometime today.

If you are experiencing extreme weather conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity, or a combination of the two, keep health issues in mind. It’s very easy to acquire a severe sunburn. Children and the elderly are especially prone to heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration. Dehydration can however be problematic for anyone so be sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially pure, cool water.
