Some people kill plants, I kill bread machines. It is inevitable that whatever bread machine wanders into my house will wander back out into the trash. It isn’t that I am tossing the bread machines out the window or making bread in the rain, it is just that I haven’t found an appliance that will hold up to frequent use, an average of two to three times per week. We are serious about our homemade bread.
Our last bread machine did pretty well, lasting almost seven years! It was a higher-end model, and we spent about $160 for it new. Sadly, though, it developed several issues and just wasn’t usable any more. I would have repurchased the same one, but the model is no longer available. So, I started looking for even higher-end models and settled on one that cost about $200 after coupons.
I checked price watch lists and classified ads, but could not find the model for anything less. Still not ready to pay that much for a machine, I decided to settle on a lesser model. Fortunately, I found one on Facebook that cost me a total of $7. It was used once, and even if it doesn’t hold out for the next 7 years, at least I know the cost was worth it.
At the very least, the $7 machine will buy me some time to keep searching for my dream machine at a cheaper price or learn the art of making all of this bread with just my mixer and oven. Opportunities often present themselves when you least expect them to, so sometimes being patient can save you money. You never know when you may get good deal on something, as long as you are open to it.
For now, the $200 I saved can stay in the bank.
