How Many Toys Does My Son Need?

I honestly wonder how many toys a kid really needs. Do you know? I don’t know when I should start thinning out and donating my son’s older toys. I don’t know if I should just pack some up and rotate them, or if I should get rid of some, or if I should let him keep all of them. How do I decide?

I walk through my living room and it is filled with toddler toys. Some are designed to grow with your child, so that they can use them for years. Those are mostly the learning toys that teach kids different things. Those I can see keeping for quite some time. Leap Frog and V-tech toys are my favorites. They do last for several years and they are educational.

However, in addition to the educational toys, my son has a ton of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys that fill up his toy box? I don’t remember buying those. I know I bought the Matchbox cars that I trip over when I walk across the room.

He also has stuffed animals, talking dinosaurs, plastic tools, trucks, cars, airplanes, boats and race tracks. Then, he has ride-on toys, a tricycle, a wagon and balls outside. I wouldn’t dare guess how many toys my son really has.

Some toys are educational and teach my son to count and learn letters. Some of them are interactive. Some require coordination. I understand that these are valuable tools for my son and that he needs toys to play with. What I don’t understand is how I am supposed to know how many he should have at one time? Do you know? Can you tell me?

It seems that kids today have a lot more toys than when I was a kid. Is it because there are more to choose from? Is it because we have more money for toys today? Do we spoil our kids too much? Is it good for them to have so much? I’m not sure. I do everything I can to be the best mother I can be. I do not claim to have all of the answers. Oddly, you would think I would be stressing over vitamins or exercise or something pertaining to my son’s health. Thankfully, my son is healthy and happy. So, here I am, stressing over the number of toys in my house…
