How Much Are You Planning to Spend on Your Kids this Holiday Season?

Recession? What recession?

Seriously, I often wonder how much the media has skewed our view on the nation’s economic situation. Every headline, every news ticker, every “top story” has to do with how poor our country’s financial situation is, and how things are only going to get worse before they get better.

While news anchors are reading stories about record unemployment, mounting foreclosures, no money here, less money there, my friend’s 10-year-old daughter is heading to the spa.

No kidding.

Young Keera scored an invitation to yet another birthday party, this time at a local spa that caters to tweens. According to my pal, Keera’s friend (the birthday girl) invited more than a dozen of her closest gal pals for a day of pampering and beautifying.

The spa that hosted the party offers a package deal dubbed: “Spoiled Rotten Kids’ Parties.” The posh party comes with facials, pedicures, manicures, make-up and hair for the birthday girl and all of her guests.

The price for a group of 10 girls: a whopping $600.

Then again, maybe that’s a steal. I wouldn’t know given that at 30-something I’ve only been to a professional spa three times (in my life!) and each of those visits were courtesy of gift certificates I received prior to my wedding. At the rate Keera’s going she’ll be a spa pro before she’s old enough to drive.

Granted, I don’t know the financial situation of the birthday girl’s parents. Perhaps, the girl’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins helped pay for the party as well. Who knows? My point is that despite all the reports about our economy being in the dumpster and how consumer spending is screeching to a halt, there are some parents out there who have no problem forking over money for “Spoiled Rotten Kids’ Parties.”

Which brings me to my next questions: How much do you plan to spend on your children this holiday season? Has the world’s economic situation made you re-evaluate your gift giving strategy? Are you planning to tell your children that they need to cut back on their Christmas gift lists?
