Jenny Craig
Touted by stars like Kirstie Allie and Valerie Bertinelli, Jenny Craig does nutritional counseling and works with you one on one to develop a menu plan. I could not figure out from their website whether or not you had to buy the food, but I am going to assume that at the very least, you are strongly encouraged to buy their food!
How much you pay depends on which program you choose. Again, let’s assume that you want to lose 20 pounds. You would likely sign up for the Jenny On Track program which lasts 6 months. (Most people lose two pounds per week. . .approximately 5 months.) Then you have to buy the food. I’ve figured the average cost of food for 24 weeks (approximately 6 months.)
Jenny Craig On Track Plan: $199 for 6 months of counseling, menu plans, etc.
Food at $117 per week for 24 weeks is $2808.
Grand Total (for 6 months): $3,007
(Just as a side note, I spend approximately $125 on food per week to feed my family of 7!)
Weight Watchers
Out of the diet centers previously mentioned this one is the most popular one. People like that you don’t have to stop eating your favorite foods. However, you do have to control your portions. I think too, people like the ‘points’ system where you follow guidelines as to how many points you can have a day. It makes keeping track of your intake easier. Again, to lose 30 pounds, we’ll assume that you have to go for approximately 15 weeks.
Registration fee (one time): $20 (depends on location)
Weekly Meeting Fees: $10.00 for 15 weeks = $150
For a grand total of $170. Of course you have to buy food but one of the nicer things about weight watchers is that although they do sell weight watchers food, you don’t have to buy it. The diet works through portion control of regular foods that you eat every day.
Look soon for a follow up article comparing cost of weight loss to using other weight loss tools.
