How to Ask for a Discount When Buying Twins’ Clothing

the children's placeAll of my children have hit some sort of rare and unprecedented growth spurt this season and we desperately needed to buy clothes. It always seems worse when I’m buying clothes for twins though. In fact, when stores see me, I often get assigned a personal shopper who goes through and helps me pick stuff out and then puts my selections aside. Nope–a personal shopper doesn’t cost extra. They are happy to have your money and they know you’ll spend more if your hands are free and you aren’t frustrated. In fact, that’s another tip for moms with twins–if you have to take the twins shopping with you, just march right in and ask someone for help. But back to the discount. . .

On Friday, our family went shopping. I bought 12 outfits for the twins plus two more outfits for another child’s birthday. While the clerk was ringing up the clothing, in my sweetest, motherly voice I simply asked, “Do you offer discounts on twins’ clothing?”

You see, many stores do, but don’t advertise it. You have to ask. Osh Kosh B’Gosh is one of my favorite twin discounters because the policy is actually written down and so you’re guaranteed a 10% discount on only the clothes you buy for the twins. Clothing generally clearly has to be for twins (e.i. two sets of each outfit for two types of the same outfit) or you have to bring your twins with you. While I’ve heard some mothers say that they’ve been told that they have to buy exact matching outfits–I never have had to. Babies R Us is another store chain offering discounts for multiples. Their policy specifically states that the multiples discount is for two big ticket items, however, sometimes if you lump some clothing into that purchase and ask real nicely, they’ll throw it all in together.

Anyhow, and perhaps more importantly, the reason I’m sharing the story of our shopping adventures last Friday is that the Children’s Place, does not offer discounts for multiples. But I asked anyways. As you might be guessing, the store manager gave me a very generous 15% off on my total bill.

You should not expect to buy one or two outfits and get a discount if the store doesn’t have a discount for multiples policy. But my fellow moms of multiples (and dads too), it never hurts to ask.
