How to Avoid Buying Bad Health Insurance

You probably realize that having good health insurance can contribute to your, and to your family’s, good health and quality of life. We are in a time when it is not very easy to find affordable health insurance. This makes some people ready to sign up for the first policy that comes along that they are able to afford. Be careful, though! You might end up buying bad health insurance.

What, exactly, is “bad health insurance”? There is no simple answer to this question. The short answer is that “bad health insurance” is a policy that doesn’t do what you need it to be doing. It would be a health insurance policy that didn’t cover what you, and your family, need it to help you with. A health insurance policy that is perfect for someone else’s family might be a bad choice for your family.

You cannot expect to avoid purchasing bad health insurance simply by staying away from a particular health insurance company. It is advisable to keep up with the news, so that you will have some awareness of which insurance companies have a tendency to raise their rates, or deny claims for certain kinds of services. But, even with that knowledge, one cannot assume that an individual insurance company is going to be “bad” for you.

There are some things that you can do in order to avoid buying a bad health insurance policy. Some of these things are rather simple to do. Do you have a doctor or gynecologist that you are currently seeing, and want to continue to see? Does your child have an awesome pediatrician?

Before you purchase a health insurance policy, or switch to a new one, it is a good idea to check and make sure that those doctors are in the network of the health insurance policy. If not, then you either have to give up seeing the doctors that you like, or you will end up paying out of pocket when you see them, even though you have health insurance. This would be a bad health insurance policy for you.

Check to see if the health insurance policy you are considering will cover the prescription drugs that you use, and that members of your family use. Some health insurance policies come with a list of prescription drugs that they will cover. If the drugs you need are not on that list, then you can expect to be paying out of pocket for them. It means that particular health insurance policy would be a bad one for you to have.

Are you planning on having a child, (or having more children)? Make sure the health insurance policy covers maternity care, prenatal care, and aftercare. If it does not, then this would be a bad insurance policy for you. However, if you are someone who is done having children, then you may not need a health insurance policy to cover that sort of care. It all depends on your needs, and the needs of your family.
