You’ve seen them posted all over the Internet… home videos of stupid pet (and human) tricks, weird stunts, and bloopers. But, have you ever wondered how each video makes it online and how much (if any) money was exchanged for the post?
Popular culture wouldn’t be what it is today without someone uploading video of what happens when you combine Mentos and Diet Coke or what happens when you stuff your mouth full of live praying mantises. Online videos are fun to watch, and in some cases even more fun to post… and yes, those weird stunts captured on camera can net you some cash.
Break.com is one of a handful of sites where you can potentially profit from unique and outrageous postings. The site’s manager maintains that “talented people who create compelling content should be paid.” But, there’s a catch. You will only see a profit if your video is popular enough to be featured on the site’s “feature section.” If that happens the company will pay you $400 per original clip, $2,000 if it’s a highly produced original piece.
Revver.com is another website that pays for original videos. However, this site is set up a bit differently than ones like Break.com. Revver runs ads in the video and then splits the proceeds of those ads with the person who uploaded the video. Basically, the more people who view your video the more money you make.
Bottom line: posting may be fun–even addicting–but it’s probably not a good idea to make posting a full-time job. There’s no evidence that anyone has made a bundle uploading videos to any number of websites. Keep in mind; typically, the most popular clips are ones that were spur-of-the-moment stunts caught on tape.
If it’s exposure you are after then video uploading may be the venue you are looking for. In addition to the money you can make, you also gain a worldwide audience, which could end up changing your life. Just remember, the one rule all of these sites have in common is that your submissions need to be original content.
