How to Build Up a Stockpile

Having a stockpile of basics and favorites really helps you save money in the long run. You can prevent extra trips to the store; you can have plenty on hand to serve for dinner and avoid take out costs; you can get your food items at the lowest prices.

The best way to build up a stockpile is usually slowly. This way, you never spend too much money at once, and you can have a plan in mind when it comes to storing your stockpile. concentrate on building up just a few items per week until you have a good healthy stockpile.

To avoid waste, it is good to have a plan. You don’t have to make this too complicated, but estimate on the basic items that you use regularly, from peanut butter to cleaning solution. How often do you need to replace it? This will give you a good idea of how much of each item you should stockpile. Another question to ask is how quickly does the item expire or o stale? You can build up a larger stockpile of toilet paper, for example, than you can of cereal.

Look at storage. Will you need an extra closet or pantry to store your items? Will you need an extra freezer? When you stockpile, think about all the items that can be frozen. Besides meat, there is bread, vegetables, even some fruit.

Once you have an idea of what you need, aim to provide extra of those items in your pantry until the next sale or major trip to the store. You can get your items for you stockpile in a number of ways.

My favorite way is to simply shop the sales and coupons and purchase multiples of an item that I know will be used up soon. Another way is by buying in bulk, either at bulk food stores or warehouse clubs. Finally, look out for specialty bakery thrift stores or farms where you can purchase meat and dairy for discounted prices.
