How to Celebrate Good Times on a Budget

Think you can’t afford to have fun on your birthday, anniversary, or other milestone? Think again.

The month of May is chock full of special occasions for my family. From birthdays to Mother’s Day, Memorial Day to graduations, there’s no shortage of celebrations in the coming weeks. Typically, I would be concerned that all of these “big days” would put a big dent in our family’s budget, but as I mentioned in my previous blog, fortunately these special occasions are yielding some major savings.

My email inbox is filled with deals from hotels, theme parks, and restaurants offering freebies and deep discounts in recognition of my family’s special days.

Here are just a few great deals that anyone celebrating a birthday can take advantage of:

Starwood Hotels and Resorts is helping birthday boys and girls (and their parents) to save big bucks with a special promotion. The property invites you to pay the year of your birth (e.g. $50 if you were born in 1950) for a second and third night at participating Sheratons, Westins, Four Points by Sheratons and other Starwood properties.

Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort is also giving a gift to guests who spend their birthdays in Sin City. Make a reservation to stay at the property on your birthday, and you will receive Loews best rate, minus your age. The hotel is also catering to children by offering weekly birthday parties this summer, complete with arts and crafts and special cupcake decorating.

If you have children, consider booking a stay at St. Croix’s Buccaneer Resort on their birthdays. The property is offering free breakfasts and kids activities this summer, plus birthday revelers will receive a free trip to Buck Island, a private island off the coast, so they can celebrate their big day in style.

Finally, if you already celebrated your birthday, head to the Hotel Esencia, the former estate of an Italian duchess in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. The property is commemorating the duchess’ birthday on August 24, by giving away free meals and free rooms for 24 hours.
