The basic rule when it comes to lighting any rule is to place your lighting in a triangle by suing three different light sources. The triangle effect gives a soft, all-over feel to the lighting in your space.
However, within your triangle, there are many ways for you to combine lighting sources and outputs. Here are a few basic lighting ideas for common rooms in your home.
Kitchen
Many people choose to light their kitchens with track and recessed lighting. Track lighting is basic light structures that are mounted into a moveable hanging system from the ceiling. Track lights can be adjusted to focus and different areas of your kitchen and can be added or taken away from the track lighting unit.
Recessed lighting is generally found underneath the cabinets or inside of glass cabinets. Recessed lighting basically is hidden lighting units that accent and add flair to any space. The light is generally dim and, therefore, not recommended for work spaces as much as it is recommended for spaces when you desire to achieve an elegant mood.
Office
All office spaces should combine soft lamplight with a harsh, high intensity desk lamp. Many people also benefit greatly from having natural light in their workspaces, especially if they spend a prolonged amount of time in the workspace.
For the lamplight, consider using a floor lamp in the corner of the office. The corner of the office is an ideal spot for a floor lamp because corners are generally neglected in office spaces. You can also place a soft lamp on your desk, but always work using a harsh desk lamp. The bright light from the desk lamp will help to keep you alert and will be easier on your eyes, as it will make it easier to see your work.
Living room
Perhaps more than any other room in your house, it is important for you to use the rule of three when lighting you living room. Creating a sense of cohesion and togetherness out of the lights in your living room is not only easy, but it is perhaps the oldest trick in any decorator’s book. Light can make your space cozy, comfortable and elegant – all at the same time.
Combine table and floor lamps when lighting your living room. It is generally a good idea to stay away from overhead lights, as they tend to cast shadows in all of the wrong places, no matter how elegant your living room is.
The Bedroom
When lighting your bedroom, keep in mind that the light should be functional, yet soothing. You will most likely want to combine a number of different lighting elements to function based on the individualized use. Always have an overhead light on hand for when you get dressed and/or put on your makeup. It is important to be able to see your wardrobe and appearance clearly. Use soft table or floor lamps for when you are ready to sleep. Low light will help raise the levels of melatonin in your system, which will make you tired and prepared for sleep.
