How to Conquer Fear

Fear can stop us achieving our potential. It can stop us trying new things. Now I admit even as I write this, I’m writing it to myself as much as anyone. I’m not the most fearless person out. There are some things I wouldn’t do because fear stops me. That’s okay, if they’re unimportant things. But what if it is something God is calling you do to and you let fear stop you? That’s an entirely different matter.

The other day my husband and I were talking about before we moved. We’d put our house in Orange on the market and we’d come down to look at houses onthe South Coast. The day was gray and rainy. Everything looked dismal. Fear entered into our lives. What were we doing? Why were we leaving a place where we knew people to move to an area where we know no-one? What if it didn’t work out? What if it turned out to be a disaster?

We prayed God would make his will clear to us and take away the fear. We prayed if this move was right for us He would make it very clear. He did.

Looking back now, we both believe it was a last ditch attempt by Satan to stop us from making this move. He is a great user of fear to achieve his purposes.

Even God’s prophet Jonah was fearful and tried to run away from what God was calling him to do. Jonah found out though you can’t run from God and from His Will.

The easy way, maybe the only way, to conquer fear is by prayer and by faith in our Sovereign Lord God.

Sometimes like Jonah we can be fearful about telling others. We can lack confidence in the gospel its power to change lives. And so we don’t tell people about Jesus because we’re worried about how they’ll react or whether they’ll turn away from us or a host of other excuses fear throws up.

We need, by prayer, to conquer our fear and be obedient to God. When we do we are blessed.

As I look at our lives now, the beautiful area where we live, the church we are so much a part of and where we are able to serve and the friends we have made since coming here, we’ve never been happier. We think of all we would have missed out on if we had let fear stop us. Don’t let fear stop you in whatever God is calling you to do.
