How to Deal with an Allergy in Marriage- Part 2

null

So, you’ve got an allergy or your pattern has. Allergies can be a problem when you eat out. We often come up against the problem when Mick and I go out. We often have to end up taking food for me to functions because it is not catered for.

Recently at a party Mick stood guard over our gluten free sausages so they did not get mixed up with the others on the barbecue. And on Monday when we went out for Australia Day, lunch was provided for our choir but we learned the hard way the year before that I wouldn’t be able to eat an
ything there. So we packed a fruit lunch.

It also means always checking if we eat out at a restaurant or at someone else’s place. Otherwise it can cause embarrassing moments. We had one of those recently. So never assume you know what is in something but always check.

Even something as simple as buying fish and chips can be a problem, as some places don’t do grilled fish, or if they do they charge three times the price as one did recently. And the chips are cooked in the same oil that has contained battered fish which means a certain amount of wheat and gluten transfers itself to the chips, so the person with the allergy has to be careful and give it a miss if they are really susceptible.

For most cooking I tend to use wheat and gluten free products and fresh vegetables and fruit as much as possible. One disadvantage to a marriage where one person has an allergy is the cost. Our grocery bill has gone up considerably. Wheat and gluten free products are far more expensive. We can buy pasta for Mick and then get half as much of my pasta for which we have to shell out three times the price.

Apart from the fact that he likes gardening and what he grows taste better than shop bought, one of the reasons he grows our vegetables is to help combat the rising cost of food since I was diagnosed.

Tomorrow more tips we have learned as we deal with an allergy in marriage.
