You’d like a showcase worthy home, but you just can’t or won’t spend thousands of dollars for great pieces to make a room. Here are some tips that you can use to bring down the cost of decorating your home. I’ll give you specific examples for different areas and how you can save on each one.
Lighting
Lighting can be different things, depending on the room and even the area of a room. Lighting can be practical, such as task lighting, or mood setting. You can use lighting to attract or enhance different elements. But lighting is definitely one of those areas that can be bought for less.
You can always upgrade or replace lighting as your budget grows and as needed. Therefore it is a good place to save. Scout out home improvement stores with sales, flea markets for unique finds or repurpose existing lighting by adding a new shade or accessory.
Curtains
Curtains can be made out of practically anything and adapted to the room. Find great curtains at thrift stores, especially character or vintage curtains, or make curtains out of unconventional sources of fabric. Even if you can’t sew, it is often less expensive to hire someone to make your curtain out of material that you supply. Look for inexpensive bed sheets, comforters, or quilts. You local dry cleaner often offers inexpensive tailoring services that would include hemming and sewing a simply rod pocket.
Tables, Night Stands and Coffee Tables
You can really save on a table, night stand, end table or coffee table. Look for free items on FreeCycle or Craigslist or hunt a yard sale, flea market or thrift store. As long as the piece is stable, you can paint, refinish or simply drape a cloth over it to hide any imperfections or a style you don’t like.
Chairs require a little more work to make like new, but you can opt for inexpensive ones that are light weight and therefore easy to move around. Or buy a complete dining room set for a steal at a yard sale.
