How to Find Motivation to Remove Clutter

Let’s face it, sometimes it is hard to find the motivation to remove clutter from your home. The job can sometimes feel overwhelming, even if you break it out into steps. Facing clutter can also be unpleasant. When I just look around and don’t want to de-clutter, I try to find a bit of extra motivation to get me up to the task. When you need a little extra boost, try one of these ideas.

Blessing others

This past weekend I got a good handle on some magazine clutter. There were two bags worth of current and mostly current magazine. I posted this on Freecycle.org and got an e-mail from a lady who would like to take them all to a shelter. The light bulb went off in my head. This was the perfect opportunity to see what else I might be able to donate. Later this afternoon, I will grab a box and fill it with unopened toiletries and anything else that I can come up with that might be able to bless someone else instead of cluttering my home.

Home improvements

Would you love to have a new bedroom or office? Sometimes just envisioning how you might be able to improve a space will give you the motivation you need. A good friend of mine who is an architect sketched out some rough plans for a renovation to our home. She could only go so far because she hadn’t yet seen the basement. Getting that basement de-cluttered is now high on my list. Why? Because the possibility of getting some great new space in our home is a great motivator. You don’t have to have a major renovation to use this motivation. Why not picture a new set of linens for your bed or built in shelves for your books?

Find ways to motivate yourself to decrease the clutter and your home will be a sanctuary.
