So I was watching television the other morning and I saw an ad for a television show that made me do a double take. I may have mentioned here in the last few months that I am really not the demographic that reality television is trying to target. In fact, I really dislike reality television in general as exploitive, borderline abusive and just downright voyeuristic. That being said, I’m likely going to have to watch at least one episode of this new show just because it features wait for it: love coaches.
That’s right – did you ever see the movie Hitch? It featured Will Smith as an urban legend known as the Date Doctor. He helped guys catch and hold the attention of the women they were interested in by teaching them how to really listen, communicate; but also by building up their confidence. Confidence is something a lot of us need when it comes to discovering the courage to ask someone out on a date or to say yes to the request of a date.
But I digress …
Anyway, as I was saying there is a show premiering on ABC Monday, June 12. It is called and I am not kidding: How to Get the Guy. Brought to television from the producers of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the show is going to be following the trials and tribulations of four attractive, young and very available women.
No, I am not kidding – this comes straight from the press release.
The show will follow these very available women as they search for romance, love and the special Mr. Right. They will be sharing their ups and downs with two love coaches who will be offering encouragement, advice and their sense of humor. I have mixed feelings about the idea, but it will be airing at 10 Eastern, 9 Central on ABC – so check it out if you’re interested.
Reality Love
I have a problem with reality shows because discovering love is hard enough when you have your privacy – checking it out while under the microscope of millions of eyes can hardly be conducive to making a short term success much less a long-term commitment. I suppose this show sounds only vaguely better than How to Marry a Millionaire the reality show, not the Marilyn Monroe movie, but I will reserve opinion until after I see it.
What are your thoughts on reality television and love?
