In an earlier article, I talked about how haggling can save you big bucks. We saved more than $200 on a new refrigerator, for example. Here are some basic guidelines on how to haggle.
Be Nice
When haggling, I can’t emphasize enough the need to be pleasant and nice. You know the old saying about honey catching more bees than vinegar. It is true. Besides, you should be nice to whomever you interact with as you go about your day. But for haggling, this is especially important. After all, you are asking for something extra. Don’t go up to the sales associate with a demanding demeanor. Don’t act like they owe you something (they don’t). Smile and be genuine. Tell them why you need or want the discount. If they still say no, ask the sales associate if he or she would help you talk to the manager about it.
Be Flexible
Sometimes the sales associate really can’t help you get exactly what you want. So, simply asking what they can do for you may make you both happy. You can ask if they will throw in something extra, such as an extended warranty or free delivery. Perhaps they will give you an accessory for your purchase for free. For example, I purchased one of those Christmas in the City houses. Y’know, the ones that light up and make a pretty little Christmas village when you put a few of them together? So while I couldn’t get a discount off of the set pricing for the piece, the store was more than happy to throw in some accessory pieces that were being discontinued. So I went home with two little benches and a little man to put in front of my little house.
Be Prepared
Probably the best way to get a good deal or discount when you are shopping is to be prepared. Research your item and find out whatever you can about competing stores and their prices. If it applies, check out consumer reports to find out what the ratings are. Would you be happy with last year’s model of something? The store just might have one in the back room that they are willing to practically give away. Armed with your knowledge, you’ll be able to ask for what you want.
