You know that I am of freezer meals and once a month cooking recipes. In fact, as soon as I finish writing this post, I plan to marinate some chicken that I got on sale this week, and prepare it into an easy freezer meal that can be pulled out and quickly thrown on the grill. This saves time and money, since chicken should be going up a bit in price in the next few months.
But, as the title suggests, you can actually lose money with your freezer. There are several ways to do this easily, so be careful. You don’t want all of that potential savings to go out the freezer door, so to speak.
The first way that you can lose money with your freezer is when it costs you a lot of money to run it. A freezer that is old or in need of repair can quickly eat up energy. It can also conk out on you when you least expect it, spoiling everything in it. Related to this is leaving the freezer door open or not sealed tightly.
Forgetting what is in the freezer is probably the most common money loser. Food that is never used or too old to be used when it is finally discovered is a waste. Often we will forget what is hidden in there and repurchase it. Or, we tend to take and replace items in the front because they are visible. The next thing you know, you are cleaning out the freezer, tossing food that is years old.
One way to get around the above problem is to simply be organized. Know what you have by jotting it all down on an inventory list you keep taped to the freezer door. Check things off as they are used and add items to the list as you add them to your freezer. Periodically rotate items in the freezer, so you can rediscover food that you might have forgotten about.
