How to Make a Mammogram More Comfortable

mammogram If you have been putting off getting a mammogram because it is uncomfortable, you might want to know that there are several ways to make it a bit more pleasant.

Okay, maybe pleasant isn’t the right word. After all, when someone takes your breast and stretched it across the room before smooshing it flat, you have to expect some discomfort. You can, however, lessen that experience with some simple steps.

Timing is Everything

The timing of your mammogram can make a big difference in how comfortable the procedure can be. Breast are most sensitive in the days leading up to your period and the days during your period. Schedule your mammogram right after your period, if you can.

Preparing for Your Mammogram

Before your exam, you’ll want to avoid certain things that are likely to make your breasts for sensitive. A few days before, limit your intake of caffeine. This is one of the biggest sources of breast sensitivity. Coffee, tea, chocolate, soda and even some pain killers, such as Anacin and Excedrine Migraine contain caffeine.

On the Day of the Mammogram

Scheduled for tomorrow? Don’t worry, there are still certain things that you can do even the day of your test to make you more comfortable.

Tell your technician any important information before you have your mammogram, such as if you have breast implants, were nursing recently or other breast-related issues.

Avoid using deodorant, powder, lotion and even perfume on the day of your test. These substances can cause problems with the test, making it harder to read or causing false positives.

Avoid one piece outfits on the day of your test. This way you don’t have to get completely undressed and will only need to remove your top and your bra. Most facilities will provide a paper robe. Go ahead and bring a cloth robe from home if that will make you more comfortable.
